How do I calculate varnish consumption for wooden surfaces?

You calculate varnish consumption using the formula: area (m²) ÷ coverage (m²/l) × number of coats. For the first coat, the absorbency of the substrate is also taken into account, for example MDF, softwood, hardwood, veneer, or chipboard. The calculator automatically includes these factors.

Why does the substrate type matter when calculating coating consumption?

Different materials absorb coatings differently. MDF and raw chipboard have higher absorbency than hardwood or veneer, so the first coat consumes more material on these surfaces. The calculator automatically applies a correction factor for this.

What is the difference in consumption between HVLP spraying and a brush?

With HVLP spraying, the coating transfer efficiency is lower (approximately 80%) than when applying by brush or roller (approximately 95%), so a greater volume of material is usually required. With air-assist spraying, the efficiency may be even lower, at approximately 70%. The calculator automatically takes these differences into account.

What are hardener and thinner and how do they affect the total volume?

Hardener is added to two-component coatings for chemical curing, for example in PU varnishes. Thinner adjusts the viscosity for easier application. Their proportion is usually specified as a percentage of the base coating material volume. The calculator calculates both the volume of the coating itself and the total mixed volume after the additives are added.
